Cherry Mash Candy

2 cups sugar
16 regular-size marshmallows
2/3 cup evaporated milk
2 teaspoons vanilla, divided(second teaspoon for chocolate layer)
1 (10 ounce) package cherry bits
1 (11 ounce) package milk or dark chocolate chips
2/4 cup chunky peanut butter
1 cup chopped raw Spanish peanuts

Combine sugar, marshmallows and evaporated milk. Stir until dissolved over low heat. Stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla and cherry bits until dissloved. Spread in a buttered 10-1/2x1/2x15-inch cookie sheet. Melt chocolate chips with peanut butter in double boiler. Stir in peanuts and last teaspoon of vanilla. Spread evenly over cherry layer. Cool and cut in 1-inch squares.
